Inclusion Insights: Context & Background to the Toolkit

Context & Background to the Removing Barriers Toolkit
Creating, nurturing and enabling inclusion within the workspace isn’t just a goal – it’s a necessity. Yet, for many businesses, the journey towards disability confidence can feel overwhelming. That’s exactly why I developed the Removing Barriers to Inclusion Toolkit. It’s not just a guide; it’s a practical roadmap to help employers remove barriers and build truly inclusive workspaces.
At SENDme2work, our mission is to empower you and your organisation to become disability confident and neuro-inclusive, ensuring that inclusion is embedded in your workplace culture, not just a box-ticking exercise. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to take your commitment further, this toolkit provides the knowledge, strategies and resources you need to create real change.
Why This Removing Barriers Toolkit?
This toolkit was born out of real-world experience. Through my work supporting employers, I saw a common challenge – businesses wanted to be more inclusive but didn’t always know where to start. They needed practical solutions, clear guidance and expert support to navigate the complexities of disability confidence.
As part of a government-backed Careers Hub Innovation Project in Dorset, SENDme2work piloted a programme to support employers in becoming Disability Confident Leaders. The project helped businesses remove barriers to recruitment, retention and workplace inclusion. The success of this initiative proved that, with the right approach, employers could make simple yet impactful changes that benefit everyone – employees, customers and the business itself.
Five Practical Tips for Employers
- See Inclusion as a Strength, Not a Challenge Many organisations worry about getting things “wrong.” Instead, focus on progress over perfection – every small step towards inclusion creates a more welcoming and productive workspace.
- Familiarise Yourself with the Disability Confident Scheme This free UK government initiative provides a framework for employers at all levels. Start at Level 1 (Committed), progress to Level 2 (Employer) and work your way up to Level 3 (Leader) to build a culture of disability confidence.
- Make Your Recruitment Process More Accessible Review job descriptions, application formats and interview processes. Ensure they don’t unintentionally exclude disabled candidates. A small adjustment – such as offering alternative formats – can open doors to a wider talent pool.
- Encourage Open Conversations Employees are more likely to disclose disabilities when they feel safe and supported. Create a culture where discussions about reasonable adjustments are welcomed, not avoided.
- Start Using This Toolkit Today The Removing Barriers to Inclusion Toolkit is designed to make disability confidence simple and achievable. Use the checklists, resources and real-world examples inside to guide your next steps.
